organizations by orchestrating advocacy for historic preservation in Boston.
Massachusetts Historical Society
MHS is a major research library and
manuscript repository of millions of rare and unique historical documents
and artifacts. The society also produces numerous publications, documentary
television programs and films.
Bostonian Society
The Bostonion Society maintains a museum of Boston's
history in the Old State House. It also operates a research library at 15
State Street which features a large collection of books, photographs, prints
and manuscripts.
Boston Landmarks Commission
The City's preservation agency identifies
historic buildings and places and protects them through landmark and
district designations. Landmarks also manages design review in seven
historic districts and reviews historic aspects of development projects.
Historic New England
Historic New England maintains
extensive archival resources, offers building technology expertise, and
operates 34 historic house museums throughout New England.
Boston Athenaeum
One of the oldest independent libraries in the United
States, the Athenaeum's collections comprise over half a million volumes,
with particular strengths in Boston history, New England state and local
history, biography, English and American literature, and the fine and
decorative arts.
Boston Public Library
The BPL was the first publicly supported municipal
library in America and the first public library to allow people to borrow
books and materials.
Jamaica Plain Historical Society
The Jamaica Plain Historical Society sponsors occasional lectures and a regular weekly series of walking tours during the summer. Boston Building Permits
Boston is the first major city to offer building permits online. All building permits from 1875 to present are available.
Boston City Archives
The mission of the City Archives is to protect and preserve the permanent official public records of Boston municipal government since its founding in 1630.
